She is the legendary djmonalisa. She was born and raised in New York City in the 70’s when R&B soul music dominated the world. Djmonalisa started spinning in her early teens with her mother’s straight arm turntable…that’s right, one turntable and a tape recorder. She says “one night I went to the Paradise Garage and as we all know Larry Levan was the dj; the way he mixed Disco and house music, he had the crowd in a frenzy…. that was a defining moment for me to learn how to master the art of mixing.” Her debut as a dj came in January 1993; it was opening night at One Hot Spot under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a cold night and the crowd began to form a line which stretched over 3 blocks. She says “that night is where it all came together for me, to see the crowd feeling and dancing to the music I was mixing, unforgettable.” Djmonalisa’s artistic spins on the “1s and 2s led her to spin at the some of the hottest clubs in New York like the Red Parrot, the Palladium, Sound Factory Bar, Tracks and Better Days; and then abroad to Japan, London, Ibiza, Milan and Europe. She has opened shows for CeCe Penniston, Fashion Week in New York, Grammy parties and DJ Tour Concerts. She is bound to keep the music bumping wherever she goes.
